Judge: Don't Release Video Of SeaWorld Trainer's Death

Trainer's Family Asks Court To Block Release Of Video, Images

An Orange County judge has granted a temporary injunction on the release of footage of the death of a SeaWorld trainer.

Dawn Brancheau was killed by a killer whale at the Orlando theme park in February.

The veteran trainer's family asked a court to block the release of video and photos taken during and after the death.

On Monday, circuit court Judge Lawrence Kirkwood ruled that the release of the footage may cause the Brancheau family "irreparable damage in the form of pain, suffering and mental anguish."

A hearing to confirm the injunction will be held on March 24 at 10 a.m. Kirkwood will decide at the hearing if the need to publicly evaluate the incident outweighs the privacy concerns of Brancheau's family.

Without the injunction, public records laws would allow the release of the footage.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has possession of video and images that graphically depict Brancheau's death.

Brancheau, 40, described as one of the most experienced trainers at the park, was killed when a killer whale named Tilikum grabbed her ponytail and dragged her under water.
