ORLANDO, Fla. -- When the UCF Knights suit up to play the 2010-2011 season, the Nike "Swoosh" will be prominent on their apparel, and the son of an NBA great played a part in the switch.
UCF Director of Athletics Keith Tribble announced a partnership Friday with Nike beginning July 1. Under the terms of the agreement, Nike will outfit all 16 of the Knights' intercollegiate teams, more than 450 participants, in Nike gear.
"We are very excited about our new partnership with Nike," Tribble said. "Most importantly, our student-athletes will be thrilled to wear the NIKE brand. We look forward to a long relationship with Nike."
Adidas was the team's sponsor previously, but Marcus Jordan, son of NBA legend Michael Jordan, joined the team and refused to wear Adidas shoes. The iconic Air Jordan shoes are produced by Nike.
UCF and Adidas parted ways over the dispute. Initial indications from Adidas were that the company would have no problem with Jordan wearing Air Jordans, but the latter proved to be the case.
Nike director of sports marketing Kit Morris said, "Nike is excited to become the official supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and equipment for the Knights, and we especially look forward to outfitting all of UCF's student-athletes and coaches from its 16 sports programs."
