Man Uses Gun, Canned Goods To Rob Pharmacy
Worker Told To Fill Bag With Painkillers
The robbery happened Sunday at 5:26 p.m. at an Eckerd Drugs.
According to investigators, a man carrying a briefcase approached the pharmacy window and handed the pharmacist a note. The note said the briefcase contained a bomb and the man had a gun, which he flashed briefly by lifting his shirt, police said. Below the threat was a list of brand-name and generic painkillers.
The man allegedly told the pharmacist he had a partner waiting, and then handed the pharmacist a paper bag with instructions to fill the bag with pills.
The pharmacist complied and the robber fled, leaving the briefcase "bomb" behind.
Police were called and the store was evacuated of five workers and two customers.
Upon inspection by a bomb squad robot, it was determined that the briefcase contained a can of vegetable soup and a can of chili wrapped in aluminum foil and attached with wire to two timers.
The robber, depicted above in a computer-generated sketch, was described as a white man in his late 30s to early 40s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds, with a medium build. He last was seen wearing a tan floppy hat, yellow button-up shirt and khaki pants.
The value of the stolen drugs could not be immediately determined. An audit of the pharmacy's inventory is pending.
