RAYMERTOWN, N.Y. -- Three young girls found a frog with no eyes in a pond near their home in Raymertown in rural Rensselaer County, about 15 miles northeast of Albany.
Ashley, Cierra and Taylor Sweet are keeping the frog in an aquarium tank. The girls note that the frog seems to have no trouble finding mosquitoes to eat, and behaves normally despite its lack of eyes.
State Wildlife pathologist Ward Stone reviewed photos of the frog and said that it appears to have either no eyes or very small eyes. He said the frog's condition appears to be developmental rather than the result of trauma or attack.
Stone said it's doubtful the damage was caused by chemical pollution, but said he'd like to examine the pond.
A group of other girls found
a turtle with two heads in the Rensselaer County town of Poestenkill in May.
