Church Says Virgin Mary Image Not Miracle

Hundreds Flock To Hospital To See Window

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston said the image on a window at Milton Hospital is not a miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary.

Church officials studied the image and talked to window specialists before concluding that the image was caused by chemical deposits building up inside the window.

The Rev. Christopher Coyne, a spokesman for the archdiocese, said miraculous images in the Roman Catholic faith usually are connected with healing. If an image can be explained by a natural cause, the church does not find it to be a miracle.

Meanwhile, the hospital is considering moving the pane of glass to another location that could better accommodate visitors. The image has drawn more than 40,000 people since early June.
