Elderly Driver Slams Into Farmer's Market, Injures 6
The man was in the parking lot getting ready to leave the weekly market at state Road 100 and A1A in Flagler Beach when he rammed three or four other vehicles and then hit six people near a peaches and strawberry stand around 10 a.m., Flagler Beach Fire Chief Jon Macdonald said.
"His claim is the gas pedal stuck," Macdonald said.
The six people were taken to hospitals, but none had life-threatening injuries, Macdonald said. A 7-year-old girl received the most serious injuries when her leg was run over by the car. The driver was unhurt and was released.
Five of the victims were transported to Florida Hospital in Flagler and the other patient was transported to Halifax Medical Center, according to Local 6 News.
Flagler Beach police officer Frank Parrish said that the driver, Louis Nirenstein, was allowed to park inside the market because he uses a wheelchair.
Macdonald helped the man out of the car after the crash.
"He was coherent and talking to me -- he was very upset that somebody got hurt," he said.
An 87-year-old man lost control of his car at a Santa Monica, Calif., farmer's market earlier this month killing 10 people and injuring dozens of others.
