FHP Nabs Nearly 200 In Drag-Racing Dragnet

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol worked late into the night Thursday to put the brakes on illegal drag racing in northwest Miami-Dade County.
More than 60 officers in cruisers, on motorcycles, and in helicopters were out on State Road 27 busting alleged racers. Officers were hoping to arrest hundreds of people but another officer put a dent in those plans.
"An officer did not know that we were conducting this operation, actually came out here and turned on his lights and stopped somebody. It forced most of these people to scatter when we actually got there," said Sgt. Louis Pajon of the FHP.
Police say 194 people were arrested during the operation. Most of them were spectators. Officers say some of the people at the races were as young as 16. They and other minors stood by as police made a call home to their parents.
