Bike Bandit Strikes Credit Union -- Again

POSTED: 6:30 a.m. EDT August 22, 2003

What are the chances of being robbed, not once, not twice, but three times? And twice by a guy on a bike?

Tuesday's robbery was the third robbery at the credit union on New Bern Avenue in less than two years.

Police are investigating a bank robbery at a Raleigh credit union that has been hit three times. At least two of the robberies have something in common: the bandit used a bike for his getaway.

Lightning may not strike twice in the same place, but some bank robbers do. That may have happened at the State Employees Credit Union on New Bern Avenue. It was robbed again on Tuesday.

"I heard a gunshot and a loud scream," said customer Deborah Callaway. "I said: 'What's happening?'"

Who knows what makes a bank a target? The credit union has been robbed three times in a little more than a year-and-a-half. Last year, a man was convicted of robbing that bank and making his getaway on a bike. He was released from prison less than a week before Tuesday's incident. That suspect also made his getaway on a bike.

Last year's bike bandit was 32-year-old Donyell Williams. He was arrested after a standoff with police at a Raleigh motel.

Williams has a long list of criminal convictions dating back to 1989. In 2000, he was convicted of a prison escape by stealing a Department of Correction truck from his work crew supervisor.

Police would not say if they are looking for Williams after Tuesday's robbery -- only that they are not ruling anyone out.

Raleigh has had 19 bank robberies this year. Last year, there were 21 bank robberies reported.

Raleigh police arrested a man wanted in another bank robbery. This one at Centura Bank on Capital Boulevard.

Investigators say 44-year-old Donald Fullmore entered the bank around 4:30 Monday afternoon and passed the teller a note asking for money. He did not show a weapon.
