MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- Police are trying to determine who threw a dog off a bridge 50 feet above the White River on Monday -- a fall that did not seriously injure the canine, according to a report.
Someone tossed the pit bull mix from the bridge -- located near Martinsville -- into the river before dawn, police said. A person described as a witness contacted authorities, and a Morgan County sheriff's deputy pulled the dog to safety, police said.
The witness told police that the person who dropped the dog may have been driving a red Chevrolet Cavalier, WRTV reported. "I think it's a cruel thing to do, to throw a defenseless animal into the river," Martinsville police Chief Frans Hollanders said. "The river is quite a ways down from the bridge."
Police said the person who threw the dog (pictured, right) off the bridge could face a felony animal-abuse charge, which is punishable by up to three years in prison.
