KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- United Space Alliance Tuesday and Wednesday is giving notice to roughly 1,000 shuttle program employees at Kennedy Space Center who will be laid off later this year.
The company announced the layoffs earlier this month, citing long-standing plans to reduce the workforce as the shuttle program nears retirement next year.
Two more shuttle flights are planned in November and February, and a third could be added next summer, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reported.
In total, the Houston-based company said it planned to reduce its staff by about 15 percent in Florida, Texas and Alabama by Oct. 1.
Some of the layoffs will be voluntary. All laid off employees will receive severance compensation and support hunting for new jobs.
Local workforce officials expect that up to 8,000 KSC employees could lose jobs by the time the shuttle program ends.
