ORANGE CITY, Fla. -- An Amber Alert was lifted Thursday after a 6-year-old girl who went missing in Wildwood was found in the attic of an Orange City home.
Karmen Barfield was finally reunited with her mother at 11:15 p.m. Thursday at their home in Wildwood. Police say she had been suffering from heat exhaustion after her father hid her in an attic.
Deputies removed her from a home on Edwards Avenue in Orange City around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.
Karmen's father, Chance Barfield, 25, was named as the abductor in the Amber Alert and was arrested Thursday evening.
The alert was issued for Karmen just before 4 p.m. Thursday after her mother called 911 at 1:49 p.m., saying her daughter had been abducted, according to Wildwood police. She had last been seen in the area of the 800 block of North Old Wire Road in Wildwood.
Investigators told Local 6 that Krystal Pettigrew, Karmen's mother, had moved away from Barfield and went into hiding because she feared for her safety. She told investigators that Barfield would beat her in front of their children.
Pettigrew told 911 operators, "I guess he found out where I was at, and he was speeding behind me and my kids, I thought he was going to run us over, so I pushed my kids to the side. And he cut us off, and I was holding onto both my kids screaming for help and nobody come help me. He snapped Karmen, almost broke her arm when he pulled at her, my kids were screaming. And he still took Karmen."
Wildwood police said Karmen and her mother were walking down the street when Barfield drove toward them, got out, and took Karmen after a struggle.
Det. Michael Meginley of the Wildwood Police Department told Local 6 that Barfield was finally able to convince a relative to reveal Pettigrew's new location.
Meginley said, "My understanding is a relative who is extremely distraught, was telephoned this morning. The suspect begged to tell him the location, which he did know to be in Wildwood. He told him he was willing to give him the information, but he made him promise not to do harm. He said he had a fear the child would be abducted, the suspect indicated in a promise he would not, obviously that would not take place." Meginley continued, "He assured the relative he was over the violence in his life, and he only wanted to visit the children, and he promised he would not take the children."
Volusia County deputies said they found the truck Barfield was believed to be traveling in near Graves Avenue in Orange City, on the street Barfield has listed as his residence, but neither he nor Karmen were in the truck.
Deputies and Orange City police said an investigation led them to the home on Edwards Avenue, where they found Karmen and Barfield hiding in the attic.
The area Karmen was abducted from is more than 60 miles from where she was found.
Karmen was taken to the Orange City Police Department and Barfield was being held by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office on violation of probation charges.
Sky 6 showed a pickup matching the description of the father's truck in front of a home on East Graves Avenue around 5 p.m.
Police said Karmen's grandfather brought the Ford F-150, which police initially said the father and daughter may be traveling in, to the house, but would not say how he got the truck or where Barfield was. Sky 6 footage showed the grandfather being arrested at 5:05 p.m. A woman was also seen being arrested at the house.
"It's not me. It's not me. It's my son," Karmen's grandfather told Local 6.
Deputies said several others who hindered the investigation have been detained and are facing criminal charges.
Department of Corrections records show that Chance Barfield is on felony probation until 2013 on charges of grand theft and burglary.
Police said it is unusual for an Amber Alert to be issued in parental abduction cases, but the violent nature of the abduction prompted the alert.
Barfield is being held on no bond on violation of probation and burglary charges. His father, Charles Barfield, has bonded out on a resisting arrest without violence charge.
