DeLAND, Fla. -- Authorities in Central Florida are searching for two men suspected of preying on elderly people by either conning them into withdrawing money or threatening to kill them if they refuse.
The duo have been working together in Daytona Beach, DeLand, West Melbourne, and other cities since January, according to police.
One of the culprits was described as a black man about 60 to 70 years old, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. The other man was described as a black man about 40 to 50 years old, 5 feet 3 inches tall and 160 pounds. The men are believed to drive a four-door dark gray Nissan.
West Melbourne police said the men strike up conversations with elderly people and sometimes attempt various scams. If the scams don't work, the men force victims to withdraw money and have threatened to kill the victims, police said.
Daytona Beach police said a couple was forced to withdraw money from an ATM by the older of the two suspects on Jan. 21. Another incident took place in DeLand on April 9, and West Melbourne police said two robberies believed to involve the men occurred on June 7 and June 23.
In the second West Melbourne incident, an elderly black man was forced into his car at the Chase bank on Palm Bay Road and was robbed of a large amount of cash that he intended to deposit, police said.
Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
