SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A Shaker Heights employee, who works for the Public Works Department, occasionally took home raccoons trapped by the city for his family to eat, according to a report.
The former director of the Public Works Department reportedly allowed the unidentified man to take live animals home. It is believed the man would make meals of the animals.
City regulations allow employees to request scavenge material, according to a WEWS-TV report. However, they must ask each time before taking an item.
The Public Works Department helps residents rid their yards of unwanted raccoons.
Raccoons in Ohio have been found to carry rabies, according to the report.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires that trapped animals be destroyed within 24 hours -- which is now Shaker Heights' policy, according to the report.
