DURHAM, N.H. -- Police arrested a man they believe is "Jack the Snipper," the burglar who entered women's apartments in Durham during the summer and either removed or cut off their clothing as they slept.
Police charged 27-year-old Jeffrey Gelinas Tuesday with loitering and prowling, but more charges may be coming.
Police Chief David Kurz said Gelinas was not charged in any of the snipper cases. He said police felt it was important to announce the arrest on unrelated charges because the series of bizarre assaults had shaken the community.
Kurz said the investigation into those cases continued, and he called Gelinas the prime suspect.
Gelinas was charged with loitering and prowling in two peeping Tom cases in the last month.
University of New Hampshire spokeswoman Jennifer Murray said the school is relieved the case may be solved.
