A new pursuit policy unveiled Wednesday for Orange County sheriff's deputies is expected to have a dramatic affect on public safety during chases, according to Local 6 News.
Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary released the changes to the pursuit policy with a father whose daughter was killed during a law enforcement pursuit in 2001.
Included in the changes:
Deputies are only allowed to pursue suspects accused of forcible felonies ,which include murder and sexual battery.
Deputies will no longer pursue suspects wanted for arson, burglary or grand theft auto.
Helicopter pilots will also have the authority to terminate a pursuit.
"Sometimes in law enforcement we get this bravado attitude and a 'go get him at all costs' attitude," Sheriff Beary said. "That attitude can get you into trouble in a hurry."
Orange County deputies have seen several pursuits in recent years. The new policy should help with pubic and officer safety.
"It's a way to turn that (daughter's death during pursuit) particular experience into a positive," said Jim Phillips, who lost his daughter during a pursuit.
Orange County supervisors and deputies will go through a two-hour training session on the new policy within the next two weeks.
