A Southern California high school student who had trouble with algebra was arrested for allegedly trying to poison his math teacher, according to a report.

The 16-year-old boy allegedly put eye drops in teacher's water bottle last Friday at El Camino Real High School in Placentia, Calif., a police detective told the Los Angeles Times. Investigators said they boy was trying to give the teacher severe diarrhea.

Police arrested the boy, who is not being identified because of his age, on Monday, according to KNSD-TV. He is charged with tampering with a drink with intent to cause harm. The student was suspended and could be expelled, officials said.

The boy's plan was frustrated when two students saw him squeeze the drops into the teacher's water bottle while she was out of the classroom. They removed the bottle before the teacher could drink from it, school officials said.

The boy told school administrators that he was having trouble with algebra and he blamed the teacher for not giving him enough help.

The school is a continuation school for students having trouble at regular high schools.
