Vegas Q&A: What's The Best Spot For Comedy?

UPDATED: 11:05 a.m. EDT October 13, 2003

Question: I've never been to any of the Vegas comedy clubs. Which one do you think is best for the money? By the way, "risque" is okay -- we're all adults.

Polly in Manchester, N.H.

Ask Rick

Answer: First, it's important to note that you don't have to go to a traditional comedy club to get a few good laughs in Vegas. The two funniest shows in town are the Second City Improv at the Flamingo (sketch and improvisational comedy) and Rita Rudner at New York-New York. Both are among my favorites in town and they are more consistently entertaining than the hit-and-miss comics at most clubs in town.

But if you need a brick wall and a microphone for your yucks, start at the Improv at Harrah's or Catch a Rising Star at Excalibur. Although you usually won't see any big names, they seem to do the best job of luring performers who are comedy club-circuit veterans and know how to work a room.

There are also comedy clubs at the Tropicana and Plaza Station, but they don't usually attract the caliber of comics as the Improv or Catch.

The only club I would tell you to avoid would be the Riviera Comedy Club. I've only been there once, so I can't say for certain that all shows were like the one I saw, but it was filled with angry white guys who thought humor meant making derogatory comments about women, minorities, and gays. I will never go back.

I hope this helps. Have a great time.
