Jacksonville Triple Murder Lands In People Magazine
Murder Suspect Freed From Mexican Prison, Still On The Run
A nationwide search is on for Chip Carter (seen, left, in jail in Mexico) wanted for the murders of three people in Jacksonville. He is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Liz Reed, her boyfriend Glenn Pafford, and her teenage daughter Courtney Smith.
Reed and 16-year-old Smith were gunned down in Reed's Arlington home. Reed and Carter used to live together, but her family said she broke up with him shortly before the murders.
The tragic story is now tucked among the celebrity gossip and fashion reviews of People magazine. In the article, Reed's 14-year-old son recounts the night he found his mother and sister dead.
Reed's death left her three young children without a mother. The article is the family's last-ditch effort to bring the man accused of killing their loved ones to justice.
Carter ended up in a Mexican prison for several months. Eyewitness News reporter Jennifer Waugh tracked Carter down there and tried to talk to him about why he left Jacksonville after the murders.
Three months after the interview, Carter paid $1,000 and was freed. He is believed to be hiding in Mexico.
Reed's stepmother, Kay Null, received a letter last week from the Department of State in Washington. In it, the undersecretary for political affairs said he would discuss the Carter case with Mexico's deputy secretary for foreign affairs and would ask that the Mexican government redouble its efforts to locate Carter.
The undersecretary is expected to make the trip within the next few days.
