William Hung, a University of California, Berkeley student was shot down in an "American Idol" tryout after singing Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" in front of three unimpressed show judges.
However, since the episode aired, fans are cropping up on campuses and the Internet, celebrating his performance.
On one of many fan Web sites, more than 70,000 people have written to say they want him back on "American Idol."
Wednesday's "Today" Show featured a story on William Hung. Tuesday, he sang four songs on "Ellen" and he was also parodied on "Saturday Night Live."
Hung said he was taking singing lessons to further his career and was reportedly offered a record contract this week.
When asked why he has become so popular, Hung replied, "Because I believe it's my personality and attitude toward life."
