A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of minor league pitcher Jae-Kuk Ryu, the Chicago Cubs minor-league pitcher who killed an osprey last year by beaning it with a baseball.
The warrant was issued last Thursday for the former Class-A Daytona Cubs player who knocked the bird from its perch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark before a Florida State League game April 21, Local 6 News partner
Florida Today reported.
The bird, nicknamed Ozzie, died six days later.
Probation officials say Ryu, a South Korean national, has not performed the community service he agreed to, which is why a warrant was issued.
Last month, Ryu's attorney asked a judge to allow the player to pay $10 per hour rather than serve the 100 hours of mandatory community service. The judge declined and ordered Ryu to comply with conditions of his probation.
But Ryu's attorney said his client performed the service last weekend at a Key West bird rehabilitation facility. Still, as of 7 a.m., the warrant for Ryu's arrest remained active.
