3 Lake County schools will have longer days to strengthen performance

Middle, high schools will end school earlier each day

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Three elementary schools will have slight changes to their hours starting at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Beverly Shores Elementary, Leesburg Elementary and Groveland Elementary School will have their hours adjusted to strengthen the performance of their students.

“Based on the student performance on the Florida Standard Assessment, the reading (and) language arts portion, they have been required by the state to have extended hours in their school day for instructional time and for that time to be devoted to reading,” Sherri Owens, Lake County communications officer, said.

The schools are among the 300 lowest-performing schools in the state and are required to provide an additional hour of instructional time to focus on reading.

This will be in addition to the 90-minute English language arts and reading block they already have.

“It is just sort of reinforcing the English language arts, reading and the literacy requirements that are a part of the standard-based instruction,” Owens said.

In addition, the bell schedule for each school will also be different when school is back in session.

“This was largely to make sure that our teachers had some additional prep time for their classes. So that did impact the bus schedule and we are in the process now of updating our website,” Owens said.

All middle schools in the county will end 10 minutes earlier and all high schools will end 15 minutes earlier.

Beverly Shores Elementary and Leesburg Elementary will start five minutes later than the current starting time of 8:30 a.m.

Groveland Elementary School will start five minutes earlier and end ten minutes later. Their new school time is 8:20 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.

Each Wednesday in the school year, the schools are released one hour early and that will remain in the 2016-2017 school year.
