3-time DUI offender crashes van into Melbourne gas station pump

Driver arrested, hospitalized, crash causes gas leak

A 34-year-old driver was arrested and charged with a DUI Thursday afternoon when police say he drove a van impaired and crashed into a gas pump at the Race Trac gas station on W Eau Gallie Boulevard, near I-95.

Melbourne Police say around 1:30 p.m., officers received a call about a vehicle which had crashed into the gas pumps and the driver and passenger were passed out upon impact.

When officers arrived at the gas station, police say they found the 1998 Chevy Van crashed into the pumps. A small amount of gas spilled onto the ground which prompted the business to shut down all the gas pumps.

Police say the driver, John Quarterman III, was contacted and the officers believed he was possibly under the influence of an unknown substance. Police say Quarterman was also found to have an active warrant out of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Police say Quarterman was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center and then questioned by investigators.

The passenger of the vehicle was transported from the scene as well and does not face any criminal charges at this time.

Quarterman is charged with DUI with two priors, DUI property damage, and DUI with injury.
Police say the passenger, who was also hospitalized, will not face charges.
