Authorities in Volusia County, Fla., are cracking down on unlicensed contractors working on structures in the wake of Hurricane Charley.
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation dispatched teams Thursday to Volusia to investigate consumer complaints and make sweeps in the area to check construction sites and ensure that workers are licensed.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the state, vowing to arrest contractors found to be working illegally in the county without a license.
A roofer repairing hurricane-damaged homes in Deltona was arrested Thursday for working without a license.
Under the state of emergency declared by Gov. Jeb Bush, working without a license is a 3rd-degree felony.
"Our community is pulling together and working to dig out from the damage caused by this devastating storm," said Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson. "Unfortunately, disasters bring out scam artists looking to make a fast buck off of the misfortune of others. We’re not going to tolerate that here. The law is going to be strictly enforced to protect our residents."
Anyone who wants to report unlicensed activity can call the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation at (850) 488-6603.
