Local 6 Editorial: CBS Reporting On Bush Documents

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2004
UPDATED: 11:04 pm EDT September 20, 2004

The following is text from the Sept. 20 editorial by WKMG-TV General Manager Henry Maldonado:

Dan Rather and CBS News have finally accepted what many of you already suspected, that the recent investigation of President Bush's National Guard service was built on unprecedented shaky ground.

And we also agree with many of you that CBS took too long to face up to the reality that they were duped or "misled," according to CBS.

Many of you have written me with your concerns and with questions on where WKMG stood on the situation.

We stand, as many of you, demanding fair and accurate reporting.

We raised many of the same questions and concerns you have and we communicated them to our network -- both directly and through our affiliate board.

The message to CBS from us was to accept, own up and correct any error in reporting immediately. This they have done today.

Both Dan Rather and Andrew Heyward, President of CBS News, have released statements which acknowledge their mistake. And an independent review of the process has been commissioned.

But we all went through a lot of anguish over this "mistake," and it's important that the real disservice to you be acknowledged.

A news organization is not supposed to "make news" at a time when a presidential election is near. We should not be discussing the merits of Mr. Rather.

And my network should not be taking my time with anything but the issues which make a difference to me -- my family, my job -- not whether a CBS News producer was "misled."

I must make it clear that we are a CBS station and the heritage of CBS News is unequaled.

So, it is crucial that our network pursue their internal investigation to the limit.

And make it clear that nobody at CBS is allowed to get duped or misled or anything of the sort, especially when it involves such high stakes.

We will continue to communicate your feelings to our network and we will report to you the outcome of their inquiry and how they intend to deal with those responsible
