A 5-year-old girl was killed and her 2-year-old brother critically injured Wednesday when the driver of a sport utility vehicle apparently ran a red light near a crosswalk, according to Local 6 News.

Police said a woman in a Honda SUV was traveling the speed limit when she hit the two children and their mother as they walked in the road at Golden Road and Bates Road. The accident happened just after 4:15 p.m.

The woman driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road after the incident and appeared to be distraught, according to the report.

Witnesses said the woman was on a cell phone and ran a red light at the time of the accident. Police have not confirmed those reports.

The injured boy was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
