Second Girl Dies After Being Hit By SUV That Ran Red Light

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2004

A two-year-old girl has died after being hit by a sport utility vehicle whose driver was allegedly on a cell phone and ran a red light. The girl's 5-year-old sister had already died.

Victoria Velez died Thursday night at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children & Women. Her older sister Anjelica died shortly after the collision Wednesday.

The girls were hit as they entered a crosswalk with their mother in Winter Park. Ivan and Yamilka Velez lost their only children.

Ashley Townsend who was driving the SUV said she did not see the family in the road.

"She (Townsend) was barreling on, 60 mph and went through the light," witness Teresa Harrell said. "I did not see the impact, but I did see that 5-year-old girl sliding down the road, that's the girl that's no longer here."

Florida Highway Patrol officials haven't finished their investigation, which will be forwarded to the local prosecutors.

State records show Townsend has had two speeding tickets in recent years.
