ORLANDO, Fla. -- Thousands of people signed a petition to change Florida law on cell phone usage while driving after two girls were hit and killed in an Orlando crosswalk, according to Local 6 News.
Anjelica Velez, 5, and her sister Victoria, 2, were killed Oct. 27 as they crossed at a red light with their mother on the corner of Goldenrod Road and Bates Road.
The Florida Highway Patrol has said the driver was talking on her cell phone and possibly speeding at the time of the crash.
Tuesday, the girls' parents and other supporters crossed the same location where their girls were hit to fight for a change in Florida law.
The Velez family and supporters want to limit cell phone usage, calling for a law that would require drivers to use a hands-free set.
Changing the law is a new mission for parents who lost their only children.
"If we can change the law and help some others, then Anjelica and Victoria Velez will be angels, angels of protection over others in the future," father Ivan Velez said.
The petition has been put in churches and businesses. They hope to collect thousands of signatures before sending the papers to Tallahassee.
"We are going to get this approved," mother Yamilka Velez said. "It's going to pass."
An organizer said he has talked with a state representative who is reportedly working to draft legislation.
