Toll System May Be Overhauled After 'Overcharging' Report

Glitch Could Be Costing E-Pass Users Millions

The Expressway Authority is reportedly looking at a multimillion-dollar overhaul of the toll road system after a Local 6 News investigation discovered a major E-Pass glitch that caused motorists to be overcharged while passing through tolls.

During a two-month investigation of the E-Pass system, Problem Solver Wendy Saltzman found drivers charged double, even triple what they owe.

Saltzman reviewed nearly a hundred E-Pass statements which exposed a serious flaw in the computer system. In some cases customers were charged for additional axels on their cars, hiking their tolls to double, or triple the actual toll charge.

Expressway Authority Executive Director Mike Snyder admitted to Local 6 News that the over-charging problem was known.

Now, after the Local 6 News report, Snyder is looking at updating the 10-year-old system.

"We are going to take a look at overhauling our entire system," Snyder said. "Our goal again is if we can improve over 99.93 percent, we are going to do everything we can do to get there. If we can get to 100 percent, of course we are going to."

Local 6 News reported that the current electronic toll system contains an over-billing computer glitch.

"We need to get to the bottom of this," Orange County Chairman Richard Crotty said. "I've called for that and I'm told that's in the process."

Monday, the Expressway Authority announced they will start sending out letters to 300,000 customers warning them that the system is not 100 percent accurate and telling customers to check their bills.

"We want people to look, now and every month, at their statements," Snyder said. "And if something is there, call us and we'll take care of it."

Snyder did not specifically say how the Expressway Authority plans to overhaul the E-Pass system.

The Expressway Authority will also be manning their phones with more customer service representatives.

If you have any incorrect charges, you may contact Wendy Saltzman at wsaltzman@local6.com or the Expressway Authority at E-PASS@oocea.com or by phone at (407)823-7277.
