FORT WORTH, Texas -- A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter from Fort Hood crashes near Waco after striking a guy wire on an unlit TV tower, killing all seven soldiers on board, military officials confirmed.

KXXV-TV General Manager Jerry Pursley said the helicopter struck a guy wire attached to the station's 1,800-foot broadcasting tower in Bruceville/Eddy. The tower itself was not hit.

While the cause of the crash is unclear, the helicopter went down in foggy conditions, Fort Hood spokesman Dan Hassett said.

Pursley said the tower's lights stopped working early last week after strong storms hit the area. He said the station had notified the Federal Aviation Administration.

Bruceville/Eddy is halfway between Waco and Temple, about 100 miles south of Fort Worth.

Officials said the crash occurred around 7 a.m. The helicopter was reportedly heading to Texarkana when it crashed.

The Army sealed off the crash site after the Texas Department of Public Safety initially secured the area.

Neighbor Recalls Crash

A neighbor of near the tower reported seeing bodies strewn around the wreckage of the helicopter. Witness Rock Eicke said he and McLennan County Deputy Constable Ken Brown saw bodies in and around the burning wreck, reported KXAS-TV in Dallas.

Eicke lives near the tower midway between Waco and Temple. He said he heard the metal tower rattle, followed seconds later by the sound of an explosion about ¼ mile away.

Eicke said he and the deputy went to the burning wreckage and saw four bodies.

Brown said he and emergency crews could see the burning wreckage as they approached the scene, but it had burned out by the time they arrived.
