A woman who hit and killed two Central Florida girls as they crossed an Orlando road in October is denying she was on a cell phone at the time of the crash, Local 6 News has learned.
Anjelica Velez, 5, and her 2-year-old sister, Victoria, were killed Oct. 27 as they crossed at the intersection of Goldenrod and Bates roads.
Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle's driver, Ashley Townsend, ran a red light while talking on her cell phone. However, Townsend's family says she was not on the phone during the crash and they can prove it.
The family released a written statement this weekend:
"We have verified through cell phone records that our daughter was, in fact, not using her cell phone at the time of the accident."
The family also wrote that Townsend did call 911 immediately after the girls were hit.
Troopers have not been able to verify the claims, Local 6 News reported.
Meanwhile, the girls' parents, Yamilka and Ivan Velez, believe Townsend was negligent and have filed a lawsuit against the woman and her father, who owns the vehicle involved in the incident.
Troopers expect to finish their investigation within a month.
