Charges Possible For Driver In Girls' Crosswalk Deaths
Woman Denies Talking On Cell Phone
POSTED: Monday, January 24, 2005
Police may charge a woman who hit and killed two Central Florida girls as they crossed an Orlando road in October, Local 6 News has learned.
Anjelica Velez, 5, and her 2-year-old sister, Victoria, were killed Oct. 27 as they crossed at the intersection of Goldenrod and Bates roads.
Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle's driver, Ashley Townsend, ran a red light while talking on her cell phone. However, Townsend's family says she was not on the phone during the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators are expected to announce charges against Towsend some time Monday, Local 6 News reported.
Meanwhile, the girls' parents, Yamilka and Ivan Velez, continue to believe Townsend was negligent and filed a lawsuit against the woman and her father, who owns the vehicle involved in the incident, according to an earlier report.
