PORT CANAVERAL, Fla.- -- A Holland America cruise ship heading to Jacksonville for the Super Bowl was delayed for six hours at Port Canaveral Wednesday because a passenger on a previous cruise accidentally brought a gun aboard, according to a report.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Joseph Ingram said a Tennessee couple ran late for the cruise aboard the Zaandam when it departed Port Canaveral on Saturday on its normal Caribbean run and was allowed to use the vendor’s entrance as a courtesy,
Florida Today reported.
The couple’s luggage was set aside for screening, but housekeepers who thought the bags had been screened delivered them to the couple’s cabin.
The woman discovered her husband had packed her gun bag, thinking it was her camera, according to the report.
The woman reported the small-caliber weapon to the captain, who locked it in the ship's safe.
"Nobody is allowed to bring a weapon on board, not even the captain," Ingram said. "Considering the vessel is going to Jacksonville and had a breach of security, we did a complete sweep and made sure the vessel was following its security plan."
Brevard Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Bradshaw said it was "a fluke-thing" and no charges were warranted.
