ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orange County Sheriff's Office has documented 62 active gangs operating in the county, according to an exclusive Local 6 News investigation.
"Most of what we're seeing here in Central Florida area or Orange County are the gangs becoming more and more affiliated with nationally-based gangs," Orange County Sgt. Eugene Moyson said.
Local 6 News showed newly painted gang graffiti on walls in east Orange County showing a "Crips" gang symbol. Another wall painting in the same area showed an apparent war with slashes of red and blue between local gangs.
The gang members are mostly older than 18 years old but can be as young as 14, police told Local 6 News. The gangs also have a new target when looking for recruits in Orange County -- girls, Local 6 News reported.
Many of the girls being recruited for the gangs are alone, and have low self-esteem. The gangs offer the new recruit a family and love, according to the report.
Two unidentified sisters in Orange County told Local 6 News that they would do anything for their gang.
"These gang members are very smart, so they offer that to her," Moyson said. "They say 'We'll give you love; you'll ride around in nice cars.' So, they're showing this girl more love than she might get at home."
Moyson said he knows of generations of local gang members going back to the 1950s, according to the investigation.
