Doctor: Dieting Is In The Genes

A local nutrition expert says dieting is in the genes and has written a book guiding readers to their specific phenotype diet, according to a Local 6 News report.

Orlando nutrition expert Dr. Susan Mitchell's new book "Fat Is Not Your Fate" begins with a quiz and a detailed account of a reader's family history and personal lifestyle.

"Most diet books are just one diet fits all, it's the diet book for the masses, but you're not really that way," Mitchell said. "Your diet should really be about you, your family history and your genes."

The book guides readers to their specific "phenotype" diet.

"A phenotype is an outward expression of the genetics on the inside," Mitchell said. "It could be your eye color, your hair color. But it's also your tendency for weight gain."

If readers crave foods like chocolate, they may be phenotype A, which stands for addictive, according to the report.

Do you have family members with high blood pressure? Phenotype B might be the diet for you, even if you don't have the condition, Local 6 News reported.

If you have PMS bloat, are carrying leftover pregnancy pounds or have menopausal weight gain then phenotype H may be you profile, according to the report.

You might be phenotype C if cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol run in your family.

The story offered other examples of types of diets.
