Mayor Dyer To Testify About Alleged Vote Fraud

POSTED: Wednesday, March 9, 2005
UPDATED: 9:01 am EST March 9, 2005

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is expected to take the witness stand today to testify in front of a criminal grand jury about allegations of possible voter fraud in last year's election.

The initial investigation into possible voter fraud was launched after mayoral candidate Ken Mulvaney accused Dyer of paying Ezzie Thomas to collect fraudulent votes.

The mayor's campaign manager, Patti Sharp, will also be testifying Tuesday. In past hearings, Sharp has already taken the blame for hiring Thomas the man who allegedly witnessed and signed more than 200 absentee ballots.

Florida law states that it is illegal to collect absentee ballots.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been investigating the accusations since Dyer's re-election in March of 2004.

A grand jury will decide whether there was any criminal intent on behalf of Dyer or Sharp.

Next week, a civil suit case continues in the case. Mulvaney is expected to ask a judge to throw out the absentee ballots collected by Thomas. If that happens, it could force a run-off election.
