ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A 22-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide for hitting and killing two sisters who were crossing an Orange County street with their mother in October, Local 6 News reported Wednesday.
Charges against Ashley Townsend were brought by the Orange-Osceola state attorney's office.
Witnesses said Townsend was talking on a cell phone when she ran over and killed Victoria Velez, 2, and Anelica Velez, 5.
Townsend's attorney Bill Barnett said the woman was not on the cell phone at the time of the incident and has phone records to confirm she was not talking on the phone.
Townsend said she did not see the family but there are still questions as to exactly what distracted her enough to allegedly run a red light and plow into the family.
Barnett said he will vigorously fight the charges, according to the report.
