A 17-year-old student in Seminole County, Fla., was killed Sunday when he fell off the hood of a moving car, according to Local 6 News.

Casselberry police said Lyman High School student Brandon Burkhart was riding on a friend's car when he fell off the hood of the vehicle near Seminola Boulevard. Authorities told Local 6 News Burkart was "car surfing" with other teens Sunday night.

Car surfing involves someone getting on the hood of a car and trying to hold on as the car accelerates.

Burkhart was killed after he was thrown from a moving car and then run over. He died at the scene, Local 6 News reported.

Burkhart's friends said it was "fluke accident," Local 6 News reported.

"A lot of people were crying and some people just didn't know what to say," Burkhart's friend Ike Hayman said.

Police are not saying how many other students were participating during the incident. There were no other injuries reported.

Police are trying to determine if the driver will be charged in the incident. The driver's name was not released.

Students at the school said teens riding on cars are common in the area.

"They do it in the parking lot after school, they do it at the park," a student said.

Students said the girl who was driving the car has received threatening letters since Sunday's incident.

The incident is still under investigation.
