ORLANDO, Fla. -- The fetus of a woman who says her abortion was botched was born stillborn, not born alive as she said, the medical examiner concluded.
There is "no forensic
>
evidence that the fetus was born alive," Dr. Jan Garavaglia, chief medical examiner in Orange County, said of last week procedure.
The mother had said that she gave birth to a live baby at the EPOC clinic last month, when there was no doctor present, having received a cervical dilator and pills that induce contractions the day before.
Her case has been championed by anti-abortion groups, such as the conservative legal group, Liberty Counsel, which filed complaints last week with two state agencies asking that the clinic have its license revoked, be ordered to stop performing abortions and that its doctors be disciplined.
In addition, the leader of the Christian Defense Coalition protested outside the clinic last week.
A spokeswoman for the clinic, Marti Mackenzie, has said the women's story never happened.
"I can tell you this is a very fine medical center," she said.
Mat Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, said he wasn't satisfied with the medical examiner's conclusions since toxicology testing hadn't been done. But Garavaglia said toxicology tests weren't needed.
