TV News Van Crash Knocks Out Power To 1,400 Homes

UPDATED: 10:24 am EDT June 1, 2005

At least 1,400 homes in the Indialantic area were still without power Wednesday following a crash involving an Orlando television news van late Tuesday, officials told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The accident involved a Fox 35 television news crew that happened about 11:03 p.m. along Boskind Road, not far from the home of a 64-year-old widow who shot and killed an intruder in her home, according to Brevard County sheriff's officials. No injuries were reported.

Earlier, authorities erroneously said the van belonged to Channel 13 of Orlando.

Several television news crews had been in the beachside community covering details of the shooting.

Residents said power was still out at 10 a.m. Wednesday -- some 11 hours without electricity.

The Florida Highway Patrol was investigating how the accident happened but had not released details.

Work crews were attempting to get a main electrical feeder back online, said Joe Lopez, a spokesman for Florida Power & Light Co.

"The power is still out to the area. We started getting calls about it after midnight and we have it assigned," Lopez said.

It was not immediately known how soon the power would be restored.
