GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gainesville authorities are investigating an apparent practical joke after a cardboard cylinder was found duct-taped beneath a Gainesville Fire Rescue truck.
Interim Deputy Chief Gene Prince said a bomb squad was called to the scene and later determined the cylinder was safe.
Prince said the incident was meant to be a practical joke, but it could lead to possible disciplinary action ranging from a written reprimand to termination against those responsible.
Gainesville Police Department spokesman Sergeant Keith Kameg says police are still looking into the incident and have some leads, but maintains that the incident was a prank.
The police official says the so-called prank cost taxpayers between $5,000 and $10,000, and the costs adds up each day they spend time investigating.
