Driver Sought After Officer, Police Dog Die In Crash

POSTED: Sunday, August 14, 2005
UPDATED: 9:52 am EDT August 15, 2005

Police in New Smyrna, Fla., are searching Monday for the driver of a pickup involved in a crash that killed an officer, according to Local 6 News.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the driver of a white Ford 150 pickup swerved in front of New Smyrna officer Roy Nelson as he traveled on the South Causeway in New Smyrna Beach at about 11:45 p.m.

Nelson died in the crash, along with his K-9.

Ceasar was Nelson's first police dog, said Cmdr. Bill Drossman. The 3-year-old Belgian Malinois and Nelson had worked together for more than two years.

"Everyone is feeling the loss of both police officers," Drossman said, noting that state law considers a trained police dog to be an officer.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.

If you have any information concerning this crash, you are urged to call Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS.
