Firefighters rescue pet dog trapped in home

A fire breaks out at a Sanford home.

SANFORD, Fla. - Five people escaped a Sanford house fire early Monday, and firefighters were able to rescue one of their dogs.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. at 1317 Douglas Street.

According to fire officials, the residents were awakened by the fire, which started in the garage area that's been converted to a bedroom.

Firefighters battled the blaze for more than 20 minutes before extinguishing it. 

There's heavy smoke and fire damage to the home, but no one was seriously injured.  The Red Cross will assist the victims. 

One pet dog made it out of the home, but firefighters had to rescue another dog, which was not harmed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
