Unexplained Deaths, Illnesses Cause Concern In Apopka

POSTED: Thursday, September 29, 2005

A group of residents from a community in Apopka, Fla., met with city leaders Thursday to discuss their concerns over a series of mysterious deaths and illnesses in their neighborhoods, according to a Local 6 News report.

Apopka homowner Francine Boykin has a list of friends and neighbors who have had unexplained illnesses, including respiratory infections, cancer and lupus.

Residents fear the air and water may be contributing to illnesses and deaths in the community.

The neighborhoods are near the Keene Road Landfill and other plants, including a sewage treatment plant. The facilities flank the Lake Jewell neighborhood, according to the report.

Neighbors in the south Apopka community told city leaders that the deaths and illness are too common to be coincidence. They said an air quality test and a water test could clear up some of their health concerns.

"Somebody's got to do something, we can't live like this," a resident told Local 6 reporter Jessica Sanchez.

After Thursday's meeting, the city of Apopka sent someone to test the community's water. The results will be available in a few weeks.

The city said the Keene Road Landfill is in compliance with state regulations and it is up to the county to perform an air quality test.
