A Japanese company unveiled a high-tech robot Tuesday that uses a gyro-sensor to ride a bike by itself.

Murata Manufacturing revealed the robot at the 2005 Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technology (CEATEC 2005) at Makuhari Messe, outside Tokyo.

The robot, named Murata Boy, weighs 11 pounds and is nearly 20 inches in height.

Engineers from Murata Manufacturing said the hardest part of creating the robot was getting it to balance on the bike.

"The whole point of developing the robot which rides a bicycle is to show the technology of balancing in the environment, where keeping your balance is tough," said project engineer, Shigeki Fukunaga.

To solve the problem Fukunaga said they installed gyro sensor which detects angular velocity and inclination and transmits the data to a computer.

Another ultrasonic sensor on the robot's chest measures distance.

The robot cost almost $5 million to develop.

It can reach speeds of 30 inches per second.

All the robot's movements -- riding forwards, backwards and stopping -- are controlled by a wireless computer connection.
