Workers May Have Stumbled On Indian Burial Mound

POSTED: Thursday, November 10, 2005
UPDATED: 12:44 am EST November 11, 2005

Archaeologists investigating the discovery of human bones at a Daytona Beach, Fla., construction site said workers may have stumbled on an Indian burial ground, according to a Local 6 News report.

Officials said earlier Thursday that a human skull and other bones found at the construction site off Bay Street in Daytona Beach, Fla., are at least 75 years old and likely belonged to a Timucuan Indian.

The Timucuans settled along the northeast Florida coast, southeast Georgia and near Tampa Bay in the 1500s.

Archaeologist from Gainesville, Fla., examined the bones Thursday and concluded that the bones were the remains of a Timucuan Indian.

Since the site may be on top of an Indian burial ground, there could be more human bones in the area.

Since the discovery, officials have shut down a lane of traffic at the sidewalk project.

The closure of the lane has hurt some businesses on the street and now that there is a possibility that more remains exist, things may get worse for them, according to Local 6 reporter Tarik Minor.

The bones will be turned to state archaeologists and they will try to determine the sex, age and race of the person over the next few weeks.
