Bloody Santa Display With Severed Doll Heads Angers Neighborhood

POSTED: Tuesday, December 13, 2005

A family's display featuring a bloody Santa Claus wielding a knife, beheaded Barbie dolls and a severed head with blood gushing from its eyes has scared children and angered some homeowners in a New York neighborhood, according to a Local 6 News report.

The display, which can be easily seen by neighbors on East 18th Street in New York, was put up by Joel Krupnik, his wife and daughter.

A tree next to the blood-cover Santa Claus has doll heads attached to its branches.

"It's just something, maybe, to spice up a little bit the neighborhood and that's it," Krupnik said. "And I think we've succeeded in doing that."

The Krupnik family said their display protests the commercialization of Christmas.

Neighbors said the family took their appreciation for the dark side too far this time.

"This is the pits," neighbor Anna Grohs said.

The family's 16-year-old daughter came up with the idea for the display, according to the report. She said she based the scene on a movie, "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

A neighbor said she went to police and was told the display could not be removed.

"I can't believe that I'm looking at something like this," neighbor Paul Deremer said.
