6-year-old Apopka boy rescues family from house fire

Boy smelled smoke, woke up family

APOPKA, Fla – A 6-year-old boy is being credited for saving his family from an overnight house fire in Apopka.

Orange County firefighters responded to calls of a fire early Tuesday at a home on Highland Avenue.

When crews arrived, thick smoke could be seen coming from the home, investigators said.

The boy, identified as Tyler Taylor, alerted his family members to the blaze.

"I smelled smoke and it woke me up," Tyler said.

Tyler awakened his great-grandmother, who helped the rest of the family escape uninjured.

"I consider him a hero," she said.

"I think I'm a hero for what happened," Tyler said.

Investigators said the fire appears to have originated from the engine of the family's truck.  The flames spread from the vehicle to the corner of the home.

Power was turned off to the home because of the damage caused by the fire, firefighters said.

Investigators said assistance from the Red Cross is not necessary because relatives are helping the family.
