6-year-old Central Florida boy drowns on Carnival cruise ship

Miami Dade police say death appears to be accidental

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A 6-year-old Orange County boy drowned Sunday in a swimming pool on a Carnival cruise ship while at sea.

Qwentyn Hunter, of Winter Garden, was pulled from the pool on the Carvinal Victory but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead, according to the Miami Dade Police Department.

Police said the boy, who was a first-grade student at Sunridge Elementary School in Winter Garden, was in the pool with his 10-year-old brother when he was found submerged underwater.  Passengers pulled the boy from the pool but could not revive him, police said.

Carnival said in a statement that the ship was on the last leg of a 4-day Caribbean cruise.  The ship arrived Monday morning at Port Miami.

"Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company's CareTeam is providing assistance and support," the company said in the statement.

The boy's death appears to be accidental and foul play is not suspected, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.

The student body at Sunridge Elementary has been notified of Qwentyn's death and grief counselors have been made available, officials said.
