A federal chemical safety watchdog group will investigate a fatal wastewater plant explosion in Daytona Beach, Fla., last week, Local 6 News has learned.
The explosion happened Wednesday at the city's Bethune Point Treatment Plant when employees who were working to repair a metal roof damaged by last year's hurricanes used a cutting torch near methanol and sodium sulfate tanks.
Two workers died in the blast.
Funeral services will be held for Eric Johnson on Tuesday. Clyde Jones also died Friday from his wounds in the explosion.
Michael Martin remains in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center with severe burns.
Methanol, a form of alcohol, is highly flammable and used to remove nitrates from waste water. Sodium sulfate is a nonflammable powder normally used in treatment plants to neutralize chlorine.
