Two third-graders were suspended from school and facing police charges Friday because, investigators said, one brought a toy gun to school and the other threatened to use it to
kill a teacher.
"One student brought in the item. The other made the threat," Broward County schools spokesman Joe Donzelli said of the incident Thursday at Orangebrook Elementary School. "There's no such thing as a toy gun anymore."
Both pupils were immediately suspended when a third student learned of the gun and told the teacher. The teacher took the toy gun out of one child's pocket, then called police.
"Any child who brings in a toy gun is subject to suspension and possible expulsion," Donzelli said. "The same goes for making any kind of a threat to an employee: immediate suspension, with the possibility of expulsion."
The two 9-year-olds were sent home for Thursday and Friday and are to serve three days' indoor suspension beginning Monday before being reassigned to other classrooms, he said.
Classes carried on as usual Thursday and Friday at Orangebrook.
"Everything's normal," Donzelli said. "It disrupted the school day for these two kids. As for as the rest of the school, it was pretty much school as usual."
Police did not arrest the children but charged both with disrupting school functions and one with assault and battery on an official, Hollywood Police Lt. Tony Rode said. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Prosecution will be up to the State Attorneys Office, Rode said.
While it was not immediately certain whether prosecutors would decide to go ahead with the case, Rode insisted that attention must be paid.
"People need to be cognizant that these things happen. If you saw the gun, it looked real -- and dangerous things can happen."
